Nov. 17, 2007
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Washington State volleyball team fell to No. 8 University of Southern California in three games with scores of 30-19, 30-19, 30-22, Saturday night in the Cougars' first match in the Galen Center on the USC campus. The Women of Troy were coming off a five-game upset No. 5 Washington Friday night.
The Cougars, 9-21 overall, 0-16 in Pac-10 play, were led by the 10 kills and 10 digs from junior Brittany Johnson. Tara West led the team with three blocks and Kelly Hyder had 20 digs and a pair of aces. Maureen Perez had 28 assists. WSU hit -.015 for the night.
With the sweep over the Washington schools, USC moved to a 23-4 overall record, 12-4 in conference and in third place in the league standings. Asia Kaczor, a senior All-American who set a school and Pac-10 record Friday night with 44 kills in the five-game win over Washington, led the match with 11 kills and added a pair of service aces. Zoe Garrett tagged a match-high six blocks as USC had 13 blocks as a team. Alli Hillgren contributed 11 digs, while Taylor Carico had 31 assists.
'I thought in the beginning of each of our games we battled and we stayed really close with SC all the way through until 15, 16 or 17 points, and then they would go on a run of points and we just couldn't sustain our performance,' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said.
Washington State completes the 2007 season in Bohler Gym with a Nov. 21 match against No. 14 Oregon and a Nov. 23 match against Oregon State. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
