SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -Jayne Appel scored four of her 30 points early in the second overtime and No. 5 Stanford avoided an upset, holding off Utah 81-77 Sunday.

Appel also had 20 rebounds and six blocks despite drawing her fourth foul with about 6 minutes left in regulation. The Cardinal lost preseason All-American Candice Wiggins when she fouled out with 2:51 left in the first overtime.

Melanie Murphy hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Stanford to force the first overtime, and Utah's Leilani Mitchell made a layup with 0.2 seconds left send the game to another OT tied at 71.

But Stanford scored the first six points of the second overtime, including four by Appel, and controlled the rest of the game.

Rosalyn Gold-Onwude added 10 points for the Cardinal.

Katie King finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds for Utah, which missed three of five free throws at the end of regulation.
