Huskies Ink Three Local Standouts to Letters of Intent
Nov. 19, 2007
SEATTLE - The No. 6 Washington volleyball team announced the signing of three local standout prep players to National Letters of Intent today. The trio, who will be eligible to play for the Huskies next fall, all signed during the early signing period, which runs from Nov. 14-21. The regular signing period begins April 9, 2008 and runs through Aug. 1, 2008.
The trio of players includes middle blocker Lauren Barfield (Bellevue, WA), middle blocker Kelcey Dunaway (Bainbridge Island, WA) and middle blocker/outside hitter Bianca Rowland (Mill Creek, WA).
Barfield comes to Washington rated as the sixth-best high school senior by Prepvolleyball.com. The 6-5 middle blocker was a two-year team MVP at nearby Newport High School in Bellevue, Wash. She helped the Knights to a second place finish in the KingCo League Tournament this fall and was named the KingCo League Player of the Year. The two-time All-League pick was also recruited by Colorado State, Florida, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine and Washington State.
Barfield played club volleyball the past two years for the Sudden Impact Volleyball Club and helped the team to a second place finish at the 2007 Pacific Northwest Qualifier.
Dunaway is a 6-2 middle blocker from Bainbridge High School that earned the Best Blocker award at the USA Volleyball High Performance Developmental Camp in 2006. She is a two-time First Team All-Metro League selection and was named to the Seattle Times All-Area team this fall. As a junior, Dunaway helped the Spartans to a fourth place finish at the Washington Class 3A State Tournament. A three-year letterwinner winner for the Spartans, Dunaway holds the BHS season blocks record and has been on the Honor Roll every semester in high school.
She plays club volleyball for the Kent Juniors Volleyball Club, and helped the team to a fifth-place finish in the American Division at the 2006 Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships. She was also recruited by California, Colorado State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Washington State.
Rowland is a 6-0 middle blocker/outside hitter from Kings High School, where she helped the Knights to consecutive third place finishes at the Washington Class 1A State Tournament and back-to-back league championships the past two seasons. She is a four-year letterwinner and was a team captain this past fall as a senior. As a junior, she was named to the 1A State Tournament All-Tournament First Team and was a second team All-Area selection by the Everett Herald.
Rowland was recruited by the likes of Georgetown, Gonzaga, New Mexico State, North Carolina State, Oregon State, UNLV and Washington State. She played club volleyball for the Washington Volleyball Academy and helped the team to a seventh place finish at the 2007 Volleyball Festival. She also was a three-year letterwinner in basketball at Kings, earning team MVP honors in 2005 and the team's Best Offensive Player Award last season.
McLaughlin and the Huskies finish out the 2007 regular season this week with home matches against Oregon State on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and Oregon on Friday, Nov. 23. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Huskies will find out where they will play their opening round games of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.
