Stanford's Appel Named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--STANFORD sophomore center Jayne Appel has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 9-18, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Appel opened her sophomore campaign with a dominant first two weeks as she played a pivotal role in No. 5 Stanford's fast start, including a double-double in a victory over No. 3 Rutgers.
Against the Scarlet Knights, Appel scored 18 points on 9-of-16 shooting (56.3 percent) and pulled down 13 rebounds as the Cardinal picked up the victory, 60-58.
Appel, from Pleasant Hill, Calif., also recorded her second double-double of the young season as she posted 30 points and 20 rebounds against Utah on Sun., Nov. 18 as the Cardinal fought off a tough Utah team, 81-77, in double-overtime.
Stanford travels to the Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam this week and will face Connecticut on Thurs., Nov. 22 and Old Dominion on Sat., Nov. 24. They conclude play in the tournament on Sun., Nov. 25 as they face a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
This is the second Player of the Week award of Appel's career as she was also honored on Feb. 19, 2007. Stanford leads the Pac-10 with 57 all-time accolades.
