Cardinal Meets San Francisco State for Pre-Thanksgiving Dual
Nov. 20, 2007
Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team will compete in its second dual of the year on Wednesday, taking on the San Francisco State Gators at The Swamp in San Francisco. The Cardinal (1-0) will be looking for its second dual win of the year, after defeating Fort Hays State in the season-opener on Nov. 9.
Stanford is led by its two ranked wrestlers, fifth-ranked Tanner Gardner at 125 pounds and sixth-ranked Josh Zupancic at 157 pounds. Gardner remains a perfect 11-0 this year, and has won titles at the Central Missouri Open and the Fullerton Open. Zupancic is 10-1, and captured the Central Missouri Open Championship earlier this month. Senior heavyweight Phillip Doerner is also off to a strong start this year, with ten wins in his first 14 bouts.
San Francisco State is coming off of a 1-12 season and a sixth place finish in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Gators began the season with the Best of the West Open in Oregon last weekend, and were led by sophomore heavyweight Steve Franklin, who pinned three of his five opponents. Sophomore 133-pounder Ben Lockett also posted three wins in the opening event, as did junior 174-pounder Marques Gales.
Last season, Stanford won nine of ten bouts on its way to a 37-6 victory over SFSU at the Ford Center. Gardner and 174-pounder Luke Feist both recorded pins for the Cardinal on the way to the decisive victory.
Action begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at The Swamp on the San Francisco State campus. Following this week's dual, the Cardinal heads to the Las Vegas Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
