No. 5 USC Sweeps Arizona, 3-0, In Tucson
Nov. 23, 2007
TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior All-America outside hitter Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) registered 19 kills and hit .545 (19-1-33) for the match Friday as the No. 5 USC Trojans swept the host Arizona Wildcats, 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-18), in a Pac-10 match at the McKale Center.
Kaczor moved into third place on USC's single-season list and now has 520 kills on the season. She is 34 behind Jennifer (Kessy) Boss for second place and 43 behind her own record, set last year.
Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga/St. Francis HS) earned the double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs while sophomore setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had 34 assists with three kills, six digs, two service aces and two blocks. Freshman middle blocker Zoe Garrett led the Trojans with seven blocks (one solo, six assisted).
USC (24-4, 13-4) outblocked Arizona (13-17, 3-14) by a 13.0 to 3.0 margin.
Down 15-14 in game one, the Trojans reeled off eight straight points on Copenhagen's serve. Gysin accounted for three kills and a solo block during the run. The Wildcats were able to score three straight to cut the deficit later to 27-24, but Carico and Garrett stuffed the UA attempt for the game-winner.
Arizona took a 10-4 lead in the second game before Copenhagen's kills lead to four straight points. The 8-2 run by the Women of Troy tied the game at 12-12. Dominique Lamb put one straight down for the Wildcats, who regained the momentum with three straight and the 15-12 lead. After Lamb recorded another kill, it was Kaczor's turn to start a streak as three UA hitting errors led the way to a seven spot for USC and a 22-16 advantage. Arizona was unable to cut the lead smaller than four points as Kaczor recorded back-to-back kills for a 2-0 Trojan lead in the match.
The Trojans put the match away with a 10-2 lead to start game three as the Wildcats were only able to keep the deficit at seven points. The Women of Troy finished the game with a 6-1 run to finish the sweep.
USC concludes the regular season tomorrow night at Arizona State before awaiting the NCAA Tournament bracket announcement on Sunday (Nov. 25) at 5 p.m. Pacific on ESPNU.
