Beavers Surge Past Portland, 67-57

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Roeland Schaftenaar and Sean Carter scored 15 points apiece, and Oregon State used a 10-0 second-half run to beat Portland 67-57 Sunday.
Seth and Josh Tarver both added 12 points for the Beavers (3-2).
Oregon State trailed 27-26 at the break, but controlled the early minutes of the second half to take a 43-38 lead.
Portland's Robin Smeulders hit a lay-up and a 3-pointer to give the Pilots a 45-44 lead with nine minutes to go, but the Beavers replied with their big run and led by at least six the rest of the way. Marcel Jones capped the 10-0 stretch with a rebound and basket with 4:50 remaining.
Freshman Jared Stohl had 13 points to lead Portland (2-4). Sherrard Watson and freshman Luke Sikma each scored 11, while Nik Raivio added 10. Sikma finished with nine rebounds.
Portland outshot Oregon State 50 percent to 38 percent, but committed 27 turnovers. The Pilots were without starting point guard Taishi Ito, who returned home to Japan after his father died on Thanksgiving.
Oregon State turned the ball over just 13 times and had a huge edge at the free-throw throw, making 22-of-31 compared with 4-of-9 for the Pilots.
The game was the last of the Beaver Invitational, a three-team, round-robin tournament at Gill Coliseum. Oregon State defeated Idaho State on Friday. Portland beat Idaho State on Saturday.
