Hentzen Wins 500y Free At Husky Invite

Senior Whitney Hentzen won the women's 500y free while enior Richard Gosper shattered the school record in the men's 50y free to lead the USC men's and women's swimming teams on the first day of the 2007 Husky Invitational at the King County Aquatic Center on Thursday (Nov. 29) in Federal Way, Wash.
The women's squad is in second among the 12-team field with 390 points, behind only host Washington. Notre Dame is third (288). The men's team is third (224) in a 10-school field, behind first-place Michigan (461.5) and Cal (325).
Hentzen lowered her personal best in the 500y free en route to victory with a 4:44.19, an NCAA automatic qualifying time. Senior teammate Brittany Allen was second in a season-best 4:49.18, an NCAA consideration time, while junior Rachael Waller was sixth (4:55.90) and Dina Hegazy was eighth (5:01.65).
Gosper won the 50y free in 19.54, breaking former teammate Sean Sussex's 2006-07 school record 19.68. Gosper's previous personal best was 19.85, also set last season. Freshman Jake Grosser was seventh in 20.53.
Junior Katy Houston set a personal best and an NCAA automatic time with a third-place finish in the 200y IM (2:00.23), touching moments ahead of junior teammate Rebecca Soni. Soni was fourth in 2:00.70, a season best effort and NCAA consideration mark, just off her personal best 2:00.33.
Senior Vanni Mangoni won the men's 200y IM in a season-best 1:47.21, an NCAA consideration time.
The women's 400y medley relay unit of Lahey, Soni, Goetsch and Waller won in a season best 3:38.16, just off the NCAA automatic time of 3:38.02.
The quartet of Gosper, Grosser, senior Bryce Elser and junior Ankur Poseria won the 200y free relay in a season-best and NCAA consideration 1:20.13. The school record in the event is 1:18.85 and dates to 1991.
The meet continues Friday through Sunday.
