Soni 200y Breast On Saturday Second Fastest Ever
Dec. 4, 2007
USC swimmers ended the fall competition with some fantastic swims across the board at the 2007 Husky Invite in Seattle last week.
Chief among them was junior Rebecca Soni, who broke the NCAA record in the 200y breast on Saturday (Dec. 1). Soni swam a 2:07.08, breaking Tara Kirk's 2:07.13 set at the 2004 Pac-10 Championships. Soni's time is the second fastest ever in the race, behind only Kirk's 2:05.73 at the 2006 American Short Course Championships. The swim, of course, also broke Soni's own USC record in the event.
Senior Richard Gosper broke the USC record in the 50y free en route to winning the event in 19.54, an NCAA automatic qualifying time and bettering USC's school record of 19.62 set by Sean Sussex last season.
Junior Kristen Lahey won the 100y back in 53.04, shattering USC's school record of 53.48 set by Haley McGregory. Lahey's time ties her with Misty Hyman as the 21st fastest woman ever in the race.
Other NCAA automatic qualifying swims from the meet included Emily Goetsch in the 100y fly (53.37) and 200y fly (1:58.77), Bryce Elser in the 100y fly (46.96), Whitney Hentzen in the 500y free (4:44.19), Katy Houston in the 100y breast (1:01.65), 200y breast (2:12.51) and 200y IM (2:00.23) and Soni in the 400y IM (4:15.45) and 100y breast (1:00.40).
