No. 6 Washington State Defeats No. 19 Gonzaga, 51-47
Dec. 5, 2007
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- The more Washington State clamps down, the more it rises in national prominence.
Aron Baynes scored 13 points -- nine in the second half -- and the No. 8 Cougars' stifling defense dominated in a 51-47 victory over the 17th-ranked Bulldogs on Wednesday night, Gonzaga's first-ever loss at home while ranked.
Washington State (8-0) won for only the eighth time in 112 road games against ranked teams.
Kyle Weaver added 12 points for Washington State and keyed a halfcourt lockdown that held the generally uptempo Zags to their lowest point total since losing 71-47 at Southern Utah on Dec. 23, 1996.
The Cougars' clinging, man-to-man defense harried Gonzaga (7-2) into rushed shots, denied even the simplest passing lanes and kept the Bulldogs without a field goal for the final 5:15.
Matt Bouldin, the Bulldogs' leading scorer coming in, went 0-for-9 from the field with the taller Weaver blanketing him most of the night. Bouldin, who was averaging 14.4 points, finished with zero while reduced to trying one-handed scoop shots.
