Dec. 7, 2007
Defensive end Everson Griffen made the 2007 The Sporting News Freshman All-American first team, while offensive tackle Butch Lewis made the second team and center Kristofer O'Dowd made honorable mention.
Davis, who recently won the 2007 Mackey Award as the nation's top tight end, is USC's first All-American tight end since Jim Obradovich in 1974. He leads the Rose Bowl-bound Trojans in 2007 with 55 receptions (a record for USC tight ends) for 794 yards and 7 touchdowns. He is the first tight end to lead USC in receptions in a season since Joe Cormier in 1985. His 14.4 average per catch in 2007 is second best among the nation's tight ends. He has 110 career catches (13th on USC's career receptions list), a record for USC tight ends. He has 3 100-yard receiving games in his career (all in 2007). He was named to the 2007 All-Pac-10 first team.
Ellis, a 2-time All-American first teamer, earlier this month made the Football Coaches and Walter Camp All-American first teams and was named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year. He has 52 tackles in 2007, including 12.5 for a loss (with 8.5 sacks), and 6 deflections. He is tied for 23rd nationally in sacks (0.8). He is one of 8 semifinalists for the 2007 Lott Trophy and 1 of 15 semifinalists for the 2007 Bednarik Award. In his career, he has 28.5 tackles for a loss and 17.5 sacks.
Mays, just a sophomore, has 62 tackles, 1 interception, 6 deflections, 1 fumble recovery and 1 forced fumble in 2007 while starting for his second season at free safety.
Griffen, who earlier this month made the Rivals.com and Scout.com Freshman All-American first teams, has started twice in 2007 and recorded 20 tackles, including 5.5 sacks, plus 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. His 3.5 sacks against Oregon State were the most by a Trojan since 1989. When he started the Idaho opener, he became the first USC true freshman to start an opener on the defensive line since Tim Ryan in 1986 against Illinois and the first true freshman to start on the defensive line since Shaun Cody did so in 2001 against Utah.
