Oregon State Tops UC Davis, 73-59
Dec. 7, 2007
DAVIS, Calif. - Seth Tarver scored a game-high 23 points to lead Oregon State past UC Davis, 73-59, Friday night at The Pavilion. Vince Oliver and Kyle Brucculeri each posted 11 points for UC Davis while Mark Payne and Shane Hanson added nine apiece. The game was played before 5,776 fans, which is the eighth-largest crowd in UC Davis history. Oregon State improved to 4-3 while UC Davis suffered its first home loss of the season and fell to 4-5 overall.
The game was close throughout the first half as neither team led by more than three before OSU broke a 15-15 tie with a 6-0 run and led 21-15 at the 9:43 mark. With 7:08 left in the half, Tarver made one of his three three-pointers to give the Beavers the largest lead of the half at 26-19.
The Aggies' Dominic Calegari responded with a trey of his own in the next possession to start a 5-0 run by the Aggies. An Oliver layup with 6:28 left made it 26-24. An Oliver jumper at the 1:09 mark gave the Aggies what turned out to be their final lead at 34-33. OSU closed the half with five straight points to lead 38-34 at the break.
Oregon State held the Aggies without a field goal in the first 4:27 of the second half before a Brucculeri layup with 15:33 left in the game cut into a nine-point deficit. Hanson made a trey at the 13:34 mark to pull the Aggies within 47-41, but that's as close as UC Davis would get.
OSU went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to increase its lead to 57-41 with 10:42 to play. The lead would remain in double figures the rest of the way.
'(Oregon State) executed in the second half. They were able to stick with their game plan,' said UC Davis head coach Gary Stewart. 'They did a good job defensively and forced us to take contested perimeter shots. Then we didn't take care of the basketball, and that put a lot of pressure on us offensively.'
UC Davis shot 56 percent in the first half but was held to 29 percent in the second half and finished 42 percent for the game. OSU shot an even 50 percent. The Beavers outrebounded the Aggies, 35-27, while both teams committed 16 turnovers.
Brucculeri led UC Davis with seven rebounds. He was joined by Payne with a team-high three assists.
The crowd was the largest to attend a UC Davis game since Jan. 10, 2004, when 6,588 turned out for the Aggies' 59-50 win over Cal State Bakersfield.
'The crowd was outstanding,' added Stewart. 'It's part of the vision I know I share with all UC Davis Aggie faithful in moving the program forward to Division I and getting used to these types of crowds on a regular basis.'
Tarver shot 9-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Marcel Jones added 17 points for Oregon State, and Rickey Claitt finished with 11. Jones and Sean Carter each pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
