UCLA Baseball's Gabe Cohen Named to Preseason Wallace Watch List
Dec. 7, 2007
LUBBOCK, Texas - UCLA sophomore outfielder Gabe Cohen has been named to the 2008 Brooks Wallace Award Preseason Watch List, the College Baseball Foundation announced Friday. The Wallace Award is presented to the nation's top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual induction festivities on July 3, 2008.
Last spring, Cohen became the first freshman at UCLA to belt 10 home runs and record 36 RBI since Wes Whisler in 2002. He finished his freshman campaign with a .345 batting average, the second-highest mark on the team, and posted a team-leading .400 average in all 24 Pac-10 games.
Cohen earned Pac-10 Co-Newcomer of the Year honors and captured Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America accolades. In addition, the Woodland Hills, Calif., resident gained Rivals.com Freshman All-America first-team accolades and Ping!Baseball All-Freshman team honors.
The Wallace Award is a dedication to the memory of former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace, a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980.
