Second Half Sun Devil Surge the Difference Vs. Coppin State
Dec. 8, 2007
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- James Harden scored nine of his 12 points in the second half as Arizona State shook off a sluggish start to beat Coppin State 60-43 Saturday.
Tywain McKee scored 15 points to lead the Eagles (3-6), who have lost four straight.
Ethan Kennedy's second 3-pointer pulled Coppin State within 43-35 with 9:07 remaining.
But Harden scored seven consecutive points, the final two on a driving layup while drawing a foul, to give the Sun Devils their largest lead to that point, 50-35, with 7:43 to play.
Both teams struggled from the floor in a sloppy first half.
The Sun Devils, coming off the seventh-best shooting percentage in school history Wednesday, made 4-of-7 field goals to start the game but missed 13 of their final 18.
Coppin State was even worse, connecting on only 5-of-18 attempts in the first half, and the Eagles went scoreless over the final 5:54.
Arizona State had only two field goals in the last 11:46 of the half -- a dunk off an offensive rebound by Pendergraph with 5:42 left and Abbott's 3-pointer with 38.5 seconds remaining that gave the Sun Devils a 26-17 halftime lead.
