Dec. 17, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Stanford guard Candice Wiggins has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 10-16, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
In Stanford's dominant 87-63 victory over No. 10 Baylor, Wiggins showed no rust from two weeks off for finals as she torched the Laby Bears for 35 points on 11-of-22 shooting.
The three-time All-American from San Diego, Calif., knocked down 4-of-9 three point attempts as well as 9-of-12 free throws as she helped the Cardinal (8-1) remain atop the Pac-10 standings.
Wiggins' fantastic performance was not only limited to the offensive end, as she displayed her defensive prowess with four steals and a pair of blocks. The Cardinal as a whole held Baylor to 36.3 percent shooting on the night and limited the potent Baylor offense to its lowest point total of the year.
The Cardinal take the short trip to New Mexico this week and will take on the Lobos on Tues., Dec. 19 before returning home for one of the pivotal clashes of the season as they face the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers on Sat., Dec 22. The game against the Vols will be televised live on Fox Sports Net at 7:30 p.m. PT.
This is the sixth Player of the Week award of Wiggins' phenomenal career and the 58th all-time for the Cardinal.
