Huskies Dispatch Matadors, 80-66
Dec. 22, 2007
SEATTLE (AP) -- Jon Brockman had a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds and Justin Dentmon came off the bench for 18 points to lead Washington past Cal State Northridge 80-66 in a non-conference game Saturday.
Vonoy Overton added 14 points for the Huskies (7-4) and Tim Morris had 13.
The Matadors (7-3) were led by Josh Jenkins' 17 points, and Jonathan Heard had 14. Calvin Chitwood, Northridge's leading scorer at 14 points per game, was limited to just four before fouling out with 1:53 left.
The Huskies, who hit just one of the first eight second-half shots, drained five in a row during a 13-1 scoring run that helped them expand a 58-54 lead to 71-55 with 5:11 left in the game. The lead never slipped below 12 the rest of the game.
Northridge, down 42-33 at halftime, scored the first seven points of the second half to get within 42-40, but got no closer.
With just two more non-conference games before the start of Pacific-10 play on Jan. 5 against Washington State, Washington used a starting lineup of Brockman, Joel Smith, Ryan Appleby, Artem Wallace and Morris. That group is 3-0.
Appleby, who averaged 19 points per game and buried 17 shots from 3-point range in his first three games back from a broken thumb, left late in the first half with back spasms, but returned to start the second half. However, he returned to the bench as Washington maintained its lead. He did not score.
The Huskies hit six shots from 3-point range from during the first 20 minutes, two apiece by Smith, Overton and Dentmon.
Washington trailed just twice, both times within the first four minute of the game, and led by as many as 13 during the first half. A 16-4 scoring run, with eight points from Dentmon, gave the Huskies command at 29-16.
Northridge came in averaging 41 rebounds per game, but had just one in the first 10 minutes, as the Huskies shot 7-of-11 and grabbed seven offensive rebounds during that span. For the game, Washington had a 42-29 advantage on the boards.
