Stanford's Candice Wiggins Named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- STANFORD senior guard Candice Wiggins has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 17-23, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Wiggins, a native of San Diego, Calif., averaged 21.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in two games as the Cardinal defeated New Mexico on the road and upset No. 1 Tennessee to hand the Lady Vols their first loss of the season. On the week, she shot 40.7 percent from the field (11-of-27), 37.5 percent from three-point range (6-of-16), and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (15-of-21).
In the nationally-televised 73-69 overtime win over defending national champion Tennessee, Wiggins tallied a team-high 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and three steals, and dished out two assists. The win snapped an 11-game skid with the Lady Vols.
In Tuesday's 73-54 battle with New Mexico, Wiggins shot 50.0 percent from beyond the arc (5-for-10), scoring 21 points, grabbing six rebounds, and passing out six assists. She recorded 18 of her 21 points in the first half to give the Cardinal a 41-29 lead over the Lobos at the break.
Stanford (10-1), ranked No. 2 in this week's Associated Press poll, is in sole possession of first place in the Pac-10, with Conference play starting this week. The Cardinal will open their Pac-10 season on Fri., Dec. 28 when they take on Washington State at Maples Pavilion.
The Player of the Week honor is the second in as many weeks, and the seventh overall in Wiggins' career. It is also the 59th all-time selection for Stanford.
