CONFERENCE WEEKLY NOTES

PAC-10 PLAY
Let the race to crown the 2007-08 Pac-10 champion begin ... The 18-game Conference schedule begins this week as teams battle it out against each other for the regular season title, as well as seeding for the 2008 State Farm Pac-10 Tournament ... The first week of first round action begins with traditional rivals OREGON and OREGON STATE facing off in Corvallis on Sat., Dec. 29, a game that will be televised on Fox Sports Net Northwest ... The Ducks have a 32-11 all-time series advantage over the Beavers, but OSU has also defeated UO twice in its past four attempts ... WASHINGTON and WASHINGTON STATE will head to the Bay Area to take on CALIFORNIA and STANFORD, ranked 11th and 2nd, respectively in this week's Associated Press poll ... Finally, UCLA and USC will travel to the desert to take on ARIZONA and ARIZONA STATE ... The Sun Devil-Trojan matchup on Sun., Dec. 30 will air live on Fox Sports Net at 1:30 p.m. MT.

NO. 1 NO LONGER
After UCLA battled it out with No. 1 Tennessee on Wednesday, falling 82-70, the Lady Vols entered Maples Pavilion on Saturday with a 16-game winning streak dating back to the 2007 season when they captured the national championship, and an 11-game winning streak in the series with Stanford ... Despite Tennessee's dominance on the national scene and against the Cardinal, Stanford defeated the Lady Vols, in a packed house, 73-69 in overtime, and handed them their first loss of the season ... This week's Associated Press poll has the Cardinal at No. 2, with one first-place vote, and UT at No. 3.

NAISMITH TROPHY WATCH LIST
Four Pac-10 players were named to the 2007-08 Naismith Trophy Watch List on Tuesday ... Among the 50 national honorees were California junior posts Ashley Walker and Devanei Hampton, along with Stanford SO F/C Jayne Appel and SR G Candice Wiggins ... The Naismith Trophy winner, considered to be the national player of the year, will be recognized in Tampa, Fla., at the 2008 NCAA Women's Final Four.

PAC-10 HONORS
Speaking of awards and honors, the Pac-10 has added new postseason accolades to its list ... The Conference will continue to honor the Pac-10 Player of the Year, Pac-10 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year and Pac-10 Coach of the Year, but new to the mix this season is the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year ... In addition, the Conference will honor a 15-member All-Conference team (up from 10), as well as a five-member All-Defensive team ... The five-member All-Freshman team will also be recognized.

NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
The Pac-10 has wrapped up virtually all of its non-conference regular-season games, save a Stanford-Santa Clara matchup on Tues., Feb. 5 ... The Conference amassed a 64-47 (.577) mark through all games, which earned it an RPI ranking of No. 6 ... The Pac-10 picked up 10 wins against the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC ... The Conference played a staggering 18 games against opponents ranked in the Top-25, including Arizona State and Stanford who each played four games against Top-25 opponents ... In this week's RPI report from Collegiate Basketball News, Stanford comes in at No. 1, followed by California (No. 18), USC (No. 32) and Arizona State (No. 39) ... In the CBN's strength of schedule rankings, the Pac-10 also has three teams in the Top-20 in Stanford (No. 1), Arizona State (No. 8) and USC (No. 20).

ARIZONA (6-5)

With just six players suited up and available to play, Arizona had its four-game win streak snapped by Wisconsin-Green Bay, 81-59, on Thursday ... Despite the loss, the Wildcats are tied for fifth in the Conference with a 6-5 record ... JR F Amina Njonkou posted her fourth double-double of the season with an 18-point, 10-rebound effort against UW-Green Bay ... Njonkou, whose 18 points were a career-high, ranks seventh in the Pac-10 in field goal percentage (.511) ... JR C Beatrice Bofia recorded her first career double-double as she knocked down 10 points and grabbed 11 boards ... Arizona returns to McKale Center for a Fri., Dec. 28 matchup with USC and a Sun., Dec. 30 game with UCLA ... The Wildcats defeated the Bruins in Los Angeles last season, 66-63 ... UA will be looking to snap a five-game losing streak to USC.

ARIZONA STATE (6-5)

After defeating Fresno State, 79-49 early Monday morning, Arizona State played its fourth game against a Top-25 opponent this season and was edged, 62-51 by Texas at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe on Thursday ... JR G Briann January averaged 16 points, six assists, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals over the two games last week ... She tied season-bests in assists (7) and steals (4) versus Fresno State, matched a career-best in scoring with 22 points against Texas and tied a season-best with two 3-point field goals made ... January played a career-high 35 minutes against Texas because of injuries to fellow guards JR Danielle Orsillo (DNP), SO Dymond Simon (DNP), SR Reagan Pariseau (who was in and out of the after taking blow to the head in the game's opening minutes) and GRAD Jill Noe (left the game with more than nine minutes left because of an ankle injury) ... JR F/C Lauren Lacey recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds against the Longhorns.

CALIFORNIA (9-2)

RS SO G Alexis Gray-Lawson looks to be regaining some of her quickness and confidence after an ACL tear kept her out the majority of last season ... The 2006 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year led Cal to a dominating 74-41 win over Kansas on Friday as she led all players with 25 points, her second-highest scoring tally in a Cal uniform ... Gray-Lawson continued her hot shooting from long range, sinking 3-of-5 treys to bring her season total to 22-of-45 (.489) ... She is second on the team in scoring at 12.5 ppg and tops the Bears in three-pointers made and percentage ... The victory extended Cal's non-conference home winning streak to 29 straight games ... California opens Pac-10 play Fri., Dec. 28 against Washington and will be looking to exact some revenge as the Bears were defeated by the Huskies in Haas Pavilion, 79-76 in overtime last year ... JR F/C Devanei Hampton, who did not suit up against Kansas, is expected to play this week ... The Bears lead the Pac-10 in scoring defense (55.4 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (35.4).

OREGON (6-5)

Splitting its games in the Caribbean Classic, Oregon returns home with a 6-5 record heading into Pac-10 play ... The Ducks were defeated by South Florida on Tuesday, 68-58, but rebounded to defeat Tulsa, 67-56 on Wednesday ... SO G Taylor Lilley led Oregon in scoring in both games, including a 14-point effort against South Florida in which she knocked down two shots from behind the arc ... The following night, Lilley set the Oregon 2007-08 single-game scoring high, leading all players with 24 points ... Lilley set a career-high, sinking six 3-pointers on the night (6-of-10) and shooting 50.0 percent (8-of-16) from the floor, while grabbing three rebounds and two steals in 35 minutes ... Her six 3-pointers made sets the Pac-10 individual single-game season-high ... Oregon heads to Corvallis Sat., Dec. 29 for its traditional rival game with OSU ... The Ducks lead the series, 32-11.

OREGON STATE (7-4)

Oregon State is tied for third in the Pac-10 standings with a 7-4 overall record heading into Conference play this week ... The Beavers put together two wins last week, including a 70-57 defeat at Hawai'i, and a 71-52 win over Texas Southern at home ... SR G Ashley Allen, the Pac-10's scoring leader, led the Beavers in both games as she scored 20 or more points for the third and fourth straight games ... Allen opened the week with 20 points on 7-for-16 shooting and continued that with 29 points while tying her season-high in field goals with 12 ... Allen has averaged 26.8 points per game over the last four games ... Thus far this season, Allen has scored 20 or more points in a game six times and has led the Beavers in scoring in 10 of 11 games, posting double-figures each time ... JR G Brittney Davis has reached double-digits in seven straight contests ... OSU hosts Oregon Sat., Dec. 29 at home ... The teams split the 2006-07 season, with the visiting club winning both games.

STANFORD (10-1)

Stanford went 2-0 last week, earning one of its biggest wins in program history with a 73-69 overtime win over 1/1 Tennessee on Saturday ... The Cardinal also defeated New Mexico on the road, 73-54 on Tuesday ... Stanford's record improved to 10-1, its best start since the 2002-03 season ... SR G Candice Wiggins earned her second straight Pac-10 Player of the Week honor averaging 21.5 points, six rebounds and four assists, but FR F Kayla Pedersen and SO G Rosalyn Gold-Onwude played major roles in the win over UT ... Pedersen earned nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and one steal against the Lady Vols, but played phenomenal defense against the reigning Player of the Year, UT's Candace Parker ... Gold-Onwude scored nine of Stanford's 10 points in overtime as the Cardinal handed the Lady Vols their first loss of the season ... Head coach Tara VanDerveer is just one win away from career victory No. 700 ... Only four other coaches in women's basketball history have surpassed the 700-win plateau, including Tennessee's Pat Summitt, Rutgers' Vivian Stringer, North Carolina's Sylvia Hatchell and North Carolina State's Kay Yow.

UCLA (5-6)

UCLA played well last week taking on the top-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, getting defeated 82-70, but rebounding to defeat UC Riverside, a 2007 NCAA Tournament team, 71-60 ... SR F Lindsey Pluimer led UCLA in scoring and rebounding in both games ... Against UT, she helped the Bruins establish as much as a four-point lead late in the first half, mostly with her defense on Candace Parker ... Pluimer held the All-American to 2-of-6 shooting from the field and just four points in the first half as the Bruins trailed by just one at intermission, 32-31 ... After Tennessee pulled away in the second half, Pluimer helped rally the Bruins back ... Pluimer finished the game with a team-high 16 points and was 3-of-4 from three-point range ... Against UC Riverside, she recorded her third double-double of the season, totaling 16 points and 10 rebounds and also had a career-high-tying four assists, to go along with two blocks and one steal ... With her 10 rebounds Friday, Pluimer moved into 15th place on UCLA's career rebounding list with 622 ... UCLA heads to Arizona State for a Fri., Dec. 28 matchup to open Pac-10 play.

USC (7-4)

USC claimed its Women of Troy Basketball Classic title with two wins, including a 78-45 defeat of Grambling State on Thursday and a 75-68 win over Portland State on Friday ... JR C Nadia Parker recorded back-to-back double-doubles for the Trojans as USC pulled into a three-game win streak and remained undefeated at home this season ... She picked up 11 points and 10 boards in Thursday's opening round game ... In USC's win over Portland State in the championship game of the tournament, Parker notched a career-high four blocks to go along with her second straight double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds ... Parker, who was named to the All-tournament team, now has three double-doubles on the season, and is USC's top scorer (11.5 ppg), rebounder (6.5 rpg) and leads the team with 13 blocks ... USC plays at Arizona Fri., Dec. 28 and at Arizona State Sun., Dec. 30.

WASHINGTON (5-7)
Last Week: W, Purdue (66-65)
This Week: @ California (12/28); @ Stanford (12/30)
Washington won its first game decided by five points or less and the Huskies improved to 5-7 after defeating Purdue, 66-65 on Friday at Bank of America Arena ... SO G Sami Whitcomb led all players with game-highs of 18 points, six assists and six steals ... Whitcomb sparked the Huskies' second-half comeback as UW rebounded from its largest deficit of the game - 12 points - with 10:33 remaining in the game to go on an 18-8 run over the next seven minutes to close the gap to 60-58 with 3:34 left ... Whitcomb scored 14 of Washington's 18 points during the run and 16 of her 18 after halftime ... The much-needed win snapped a three-game losing streak and gives UW some momentum as it heads to the Bay Area for Pac-10 play against No. 11 California on Fri., Dec. 28 and No. 2 Stanford on Sun., Dec. 30.

WASHINGTON STATE (3-8)

This Week: @ Stanford (12/28); @ California (12/30)
*SO G Colleen Betteridge scored a team-high 16 points against Long Beach State on Friday, which tied her career-high she set against UCLA Dec. 29, 2006 ... She finished the night with four 3-point field goals, also a career-high ... Despite the career night for Betteridge, the Cougars could not pick up the win, losing by just six points, 61-55 ... Washington State was also defeated by Montana, 74-54, on Tuesday ... FR F Katie Calderwood led the team with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field against the Lady Griz ... Six different players have led WSU in game scoring this season, including JR G Katie Appleton on five different occasions ...Washington State opens Pac-10 play at Stanford Fri., Dec. 28 ... The Cougars are looking for their first win ever against the Cardinal ... WSU, which is 19-24 all-time against California, faces the Bears on Sun., Dec. 30.
