Cougars Fall to No. 2 Stanford in Conference Opener

Dec. 28, 2007

STANFORD, Calif. - The Washington State women's basketball team faced a tough challenge for their Pacific-10 Conference opener Friday, falling 105-47 to Stanford, the nation's second-ranked team. WSU fell to 3-9 on the season and 0-1 in conference action, while the No. 2 Cardinal improved to 11-1 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10.

'This was a tough night for us,' WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. 'I thought we did a good job of executing our game plan in the first half. Stanford was taking the shots we wanted them to take. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a rebound. This was a great experience for our young team.'

WSU was led by sophomore guard Alexa Price, who scored nine points on three 3-point baskets. Junior forward Heather Molzen added eight points.

Stanford Head Coach Tara Vanderveer recorded her 700th career win, becoming the seventh Division I women's basketball head coach to reach the milestone.

'I would like to congratulate Tara on her amazing accomplishment,' Daugherty said. 'This is not just good for Tara and Stanford, but also the Pac-10.'

Junior center Ebonee Coates' two first-half blocked shots moved her into sole possession of fifth place on the WSU all-time list for career blocks with 60. She moved up two places, passing Kate Benz (2004-07) and Keisha Moore (2005-06) who each had 59 on their Cougar careers.

The Cougars conclude 2007 and continue their Pac-10 season at 11th-ranked California, Sunday (Dec. 30). WSU and the Golden Bears are slated to tip-off at 2 p.m. at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.
