Catching Up With Coach J

Hello Husky Fans -
Happy New Year!! I hope this finds you well and having enjoyed the holiday with friends and family. The New Year brings with it the beginning of conference play, but before we get into that I'd like to re-cap the events of the past month. Let's get started...
In mid-December we held our second 'PWOW' at Susan's café in Seward Park. 'PWOW' stands for 'Phenomenal Women of Washington' and is our way of reconnecting with the alumni in the surrounding area, to discuss our favorite subject-- Husky Basketball! Over brunch we spent hours conversing with nine former players about their experience as a Husky. Our alumni are an invaluable part of our program and it was nothing short of inspirational to hear them talk about playing in an arena packed with Dawg fans who came to see one thing; DEFENSE.
As a matter of fact, I enjoyed it so much that on December 26, I invited a few of them to come out and speak (passionately) about what it means to be a Husky, about what it means to be the Pride of the West. The stories are endless.
So much took place during the month of December...my last entry left off before the UC Irvine game, so we'll start there! After beating UC Irvine we came up short against Pepperdine before traveling to the hometown of senior Emily Florence to play Boise State. Although we suffered a disappointing loss, it was great to see such hometown support for Emily and her Husky Family.
Following the game the Florence Family graciously opened their home to our team for a post game meal and some great team interaction. It was starting to snow when the team arrived but inside the warmth was overflowing...One of the highlights was without a doubt the homemade desserts!!! Thank you to the Florence family from all of us-- the players left very well-fed!
We returned home to close out non-conference play against Ohio State and Purdue. We played a strong second half against Ohio State and used that momentum to upset Purdue on Dec. 21 in a thrilling defensive effort. I was truly proud of the way we played and we left with a great team win-and an excellent early Christmas present :)
Huskies in the Community...
During the Season of Giving we had the opportunity to help a family in need this Christmas. The Huskies participated in the Adopt-a-Family Program through the Providence House in South Seattle. While the team enjoyed shopping for and wrapping the presents, the real gift came in the delivery of the items to the family's home. It's often easy to take for granted the gifts in our lives and miss out on the true meaning of Christmas, but this was an experience that certainly gave us some perspective.
The Huskies also had the opportunity to experience the holiday season together by attending a performance of the Nutcracker at McCaw Hall in downtown Seattle on Dec. 19. With as much time as we spend in the gym it was nice to get out and soak up some of the arts and culture that abound in Seattle. As junior Michelle Augustavo said, 'I love the Nutcracker! It's sort of just not Christmas without it...'
After returning from a few days home with their families the Huskies traveled to Northern California to open Conference play against Cal and Stanford (respectfully ranked 11th and 2nd in national polls). We had a rough start at Cal but defensively showed much improvement during the Stanford game.
Practices are going well and as always, team defense continues to be our emphasis in addition to rebounding. Now we add to that plate, STAYNG HEALTHY.
Sophomore Laura McLellan and freshman Mackenzie Argens both underwent knee surgery on December 19th. They were in good spirits following their procedures and though Mackenzie's injury was season-ending we are hopeful that Laura will return later this year.
It is great having Andrea Plouffe back on the court again. She has been out with nagging tendinitis in her Achilles, but 'Dre' is back now and her defensive aggression and leadership has been truly welcomed.
Our next game is this Friday, January 4 at 7pm at Washington State on FSN Northwest. Next week we will play the Southern California schools at the Bank, starting with UCLA on Thursday at 7pm and then USC on Sunday at 3pm.
Wishing you the best in the New Year, and we hope to see you in the stands!
