Jan. 5, 2008
IRVINE, Calif. - The Washington State swim team won the UCI/Ayres Hotel & Suites Sprint Invitational Saturday with 659 points. UC Irvine was second with 409 points.
'Today's races reflected the hard work the team has put in over the winter training,' said WSU Head Coach Erica Quam. 'We haven't raced since Princeton so it was good to get off the blocks and shake some of the kinks out.'
The Cougars were led by three first place finishes including Rugile Mileisyte in the 100 backstroke (59.14), Elyse Peterson in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.19) and Shawna Keller in the 50 breaststroke (31.07).
Mileisyte added a second-place finish in the 200 IM (2:12.70) and three third-place showings. Michaela Ahlin also had a strong showing at the Sprint Invitational placing second in the 50 backstroke (29.21) and the 50 butterfly (26.84).
WSU was runner-up at the afternoon's Distance Invitational with 121 points behind UC Irvine's 166 points.
Ahlin won the 400 IM (4:29.60) and Jennifer Dean placed fourth in the 1000 freestyle (10:50.06).
The Cougars will take a week off before competing at the Long Beach Grand Prix Jan. 19-21.
