Freshman Alex Clayton is second in ITA Preseason Rankings

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Preseason Rankings named three Cardinal singles players in the top 100, including ranking freshman Alex Clayton as the number two singles player in the country in their poll released Tuesday. Freshman Ted Kelly, with a 3-1 record including a victory over then #14 Pierre Mouillon of Cal, comes in at 41 and junior Matt Bruch is ranked 95 in the poll. In the team rankings the Cardinal comes in at number 42, a 13 spot jump from their finish last year.
Clayton, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, entered the fall season with an ITA ranking of 111, but has since gone 10-2 overall and 9-2 against nationally ranked opponents. In his first college action at the All-American Championships, Clayton played his way into the quarterfinals and at the ITA National Indoor Championships he beat #3 Dominic Inglot of Virginia and #8 Greg Oullette of Florida before falling in the semifinals to the eventual champion and #1 player Somdev Devvarman of Virginia.
A computer compiled this version of the ITA rankings, factoring in only this years wins and losses. With three ranked singles players, the Cardinal has the most in the Pac-10.
