Men's Tennis Back In Action At Nordstrom Open
Jan. 9, 2008
SEATTLE - The Husky men's tennis team welcomes the new year this weekend with the Nordstrom Open, an exhibition tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center featuring every member of the team plus numerous local pros and junior talents.
The singles tournament runs from Friday to Sunday, with play beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. The draw features 42 players, 12 of which are current Huskies, creating the potential for some all-UW showdowns.
The tournament's top seed is former Husky Daniel Chu, who graduated last year after setting the career doubles wins record along with Alex Slovic. Chu's younger brother and current Husky David Chu earned a No. 5 seed. The younger Chu earned a team-leading 10 singles wins in the fall.
The remaining seeded players are all current Huskies, including No. 2 Andy Kuharszky, No. 3 Patrik Fischer, No. 4 Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, and three additional No. 5 seeds: Derek Drabble, Tobi Obenaus, and Ryo Sekiguchi.
The Huskies are ranked 37th in the first Fila/ITA Rankings of the year, which were released on Tuesday. The dual season will open in earnest on Jan. 24 when the Huskies host Gonzaga at 1:30 p.m.
