Singles Play Leads Cardinal At Freeman Memorial

STANFORD, Calif.- All four Stanford players entered in the top flight division of the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday, picking up two wins apiece on the opening day of competition in Las Vegas, Nev.
Senior Celia Durkin and freshman Hilary Barte each posted a pair of straight-set wins in their first two matches. Durkin cruised past UNLV's Katy Williams 6-1, 6-2 before defeating Florida's Megan Alexander 6-3, 6-3. Barte downed Austin Smith of North Carolina 6-3, 6-3 and breezed past Arizona State's Nadia Abdala 6-3, 6-1.
Fellow senior Whitney Deason rebounded from a scoreless first set to defeat Arizona State's Kelcy McKenna 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 and also won a three-setter in the same fashion over UNLV's Elena Gantcheva 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.
Junior Jessica Nguyen topped North Carolina's Laura Reichart 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the opening round before handling UNLV's Kristina Nedeltcheva 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16.
Senior Lejla Hodzic and freshman Jennifer Yen were participating in the second flight. Hodzic dropped her opening match to Arizona State's Ashlee Brown 6-1, 6-1 while Yen earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over UNLV's Adrienn Hidvegi.
Two Cardinal doubles teams were in action. The duo of Deason and Nguyen stopped Georgia Tech's Amanda McDowell and Whitney McCray 8-5, but the tandem of Barte and Durkin dropped an 8-5 decision to North Carolina's Austin Smith and Katrina Tsang.
