Stanford To Begin Spring Season At The Sherwood Cup

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Stanford Men's Tennis team will be traveling to Southern California for their first spring competition of the 2007-08 season. The Cardinal will be participating in the four-day Sherwood Cup tournament at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif. starting Friday, January 18.

Stanford will send eight players to the tournament, which includes 31 singles players (plus one bye) and 15 doubles teams (also one bye).

Competing for the Cardinal this weekend will be sophomore Kevin Kaiser, senior Phil Kao, sophomore Paul Morrissey, senior Blake Muller, freshman Ted Kelly, sophomore Richard Wire, freshman Gregory Hirshman, and junior Jeff Zeller. All eight players will be competing in singles, and the doubles pairs are Muller/Kelly, Hirshman/Wire, Kao/Kaiser, and Morrissey/Zeller.

In singles, Wire received the only seed for Stanford at #6 and will face Baylor's Attila Bucko in the first round. In other first round seeded match-ups, The Cardinal's Kaiser is slated to face Baylor's #3 seed Denes Lukacs while Morrisey will duel UCLA's #5 seed Mathieu Dehaine.

In doubles, Kelly/Muller received the #3 seed and will face UCLA's Chris Ho/Josh Miller.
