Stanford Opens First Day Of Singles Play At Sherwood Cup

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal completed a tough first day of singles action at Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. The Cardinal went 1-6 in the first round and will continue singles play tomorrow in the consolation bracket with matches at 9:00 a.m and 10:30 a.m.

Freshman Gregory Hirshman defeated UCLA's Josh Miller 6-4, 6-3 to provide Stanford's only win of the day and advanced to face #1 seed Robert Farah from USC in the second round. Farah went on to deafeat Hirshman 6-0, 6-2.

Sophomore Paul Morrissey received a bye into the second round where he matched up with Jordan Rux of Baylor. Rux needed three sets to defeat Morrissey 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.

Stanford will begin doubles play tomorrow at 8 a.m. Freshman Ted Kelly and junior Blake Muller are seeded third of 15 teams and will face UCLA's Chris Ho and Josh Miller.
