BERKELEY - The No. 22 California women's gymnastics team lost its home opener to No. 23 Arizona State, Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears (2-1) finished with a final score of 191.750, while the Sun Devils (1-3) secured a mark of 195.175. Cal won two events, as junior Joanna Bennett took top honors on bars with a personal best of 9.900 and senior Keiko Nakamura also reached a new PR with her mark of 9.850 to take first on beam.

'I was very proud of our performances on bars and beam today,' said Cal head coach Cari DuBois. 'We have a few aches and pains, nothing major, but I didn't want to take the risk of having them compete and increase the injury. I'm really pleased at how hard they're working, and they're looking better than they've ever looked as a team at this time of the year.'

Bennett also hit a new personal best on beam with her score of 9.825, second only to Nakamura. Her 9.900 score on bars was also the highest score of the meet for both teams. Senior Siobhan Luce was the third Bear to reach a new PR. On bars, she finished second with a mark of 9.875.In the all-around sophomore Sophia Hocini was first among Cal gymnasts with a score of 38.475, with Luce second on the team at 38.250 and Bennett third with 37.750. The Bears travel to Seattle next weekend to face Washington Friday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. Cal returns to Berkeley on Feb. 10 when it hosts the 2008 Pink Meet against No. 16 Oregon State at 2 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
