Jan. 21, 2008
STANFORD, Calif.- Freshman Carolyn McVeigh's outstanding run at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic came to an end on Sunday afternoon when she dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to UCLA's Riza Zalameda in the singles championship match.
Zalameda, listed at No. 25 in the latest ITA rankings, defeated No. 58 McVeigh to capture the first of two titles on the day. The win earns Zalameda a qualifying wild card into the WTA Tour's Pacific Life Open, March 10 and 11, also in Indian Wells.
Following her singles win, Zalameda then teamed with Tracy Lin to capture the doubles championship.
Prior to reaching the final, Zalameda and Lin edged Stanford's duo of McVeigh and sophomore Lindsay Burdette 8-6 in the semifinals.
Stanford opens its dual match season on Friday, Jan. 25, with a home match against UC Davis at 1:30 p.m.
