Jan. 23, 2008
Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford softball team appeared 19th when the 2008 USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll was announced today. The Cardinal begins the season on Feb. 8 at the University of San Diego Tournament in San Diego.
The Cardinal finished 2007 with a 35-21-1 record, a Regional final appearance and a No. 20 ranking in the NFCA poll. Stanford returns 11 letterwinners from last year's squad, including 2007 All-American center fielder Alissa Haber. The Cardinal also returns both of its pitchers from last season, junior Missy Penna and senior Becky McCullough.
Stanford has been ranked in every regular-season NFCA poll since 1998, and spent 85 weeks in the NFCA top-10. The program's highest preseason ranking (No. 3) came in 2002 and the squad reached a program-high No. 2 rank later that year.
Seven of the eight Pac-10 squads appeared in the poll's top-10. Defending national champion Arizona earned the top spot, and Arizona State came in at No. 3. Along with the Cardinal, Washington (11), UCLA (14), Oregon State (18) and Oregon (20) also represented the Pac-10 in the poll.
