Huskies Sweep Zags In Season Opener
Jan. 24, 2008
SEATTLE - It was an efficient first showing for the Washington men's tennis team, as they swept the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 7-0, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center this afternoon. The 37th-ranked Huskies (1-0) did not surrender a set in the win, and five players made their UW dual match debuts.
Washington ran away in four singles matches starting with junior Patrik Fischer (Bern, Switzerland) at No. 2 singles, who was first off with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Stefan Feddersen. The next point came from junior Ryo Sekiguchi (Tokyo, Japan) at No. 5 singles, where the transfer from San Diego scored his first Husky dual win, 6-0, 6-1 over Charles Adams. Senior Andy Kuharszky (Budapest, Hungary) enjoyed the clinching win, 6-0, 6-1 over Roman Dojcak at No. 1 singles, his first time manning the top spot. Junior David Chu (Vancouver, B.C.) posted another 6-0, 6-1 win, this one at No. 6 singles over Logan Napolsky.
The only true freshman starting in singles today was Tobi Obenaus (Waidhofen, Austria) in the fourth singles spot. Nerves may have been a factor in his first set against Zack Radetzky, but Obenaus fought and won the set, 6-4, then cruised, 6-0, in the second. Sophomore Derek Drabble (Johannesburg, South Africa) had the toughest fight on his hands, but came through at No. 3 singles vs. Cooper Fratt. Drabble took the first set, 6-2, but fell behind 5-6 in the second set with Fratt serving. Drabble broke back to force a tiebreak, then rolled to the 7-1 win to end the day's action.
'Our guys came and with a solid effort, played aggressively, and came away with the win,' said Head Coach Matt Anger, now in his 14th-season at the helm. 'It was a good start and we want to come back tomorrow and improve some more.'
The Huskies took the doubles point with relative ease, the only question being whether they could record a sweep. Drabble and Fischer scored an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Fedderson and Docjak, and Kuharszky and freshman Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (Chennai, India) won by the same score at No. 2 doubles to win the point. At No. 3 doubles, redshirt freshman Brad Bator (Bothell, Wash.) and freshman Martin Kildahl (Oslo, Norway) broke Gonzaga's Fratt and Radetzky at 6-6, and then served out the match to win 8-6.
Tomorrow, Jan. 25, the Huskies are back in action, taking on Portland at 5 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
