#3 Arizona Tops #2 Stanford in Pac-10 Dual Meet

The #2 Cardinal fell behind early and could never recover as #3 Arizona led from start to finish winning Saturday afternoon's meet at the Avery Aquatic Center, 184-114. Arizona had several strong swims, including a pool record from Albert Subirats in the 100 fly to catapult the Wildcats to victory.
Arizona got off to an early lead when they won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:27.73. The Stanford `A' team of Eugene Godsoe, Paul Kornfeld, Austin Staab, and Jason Dunford finished just behind in second place with a time of 1:28.85.
In the 200 free, Daniel Beal swam well with a time of 1:37.68, but ended up third after leading for most of the race. Nicolas Nilo of Arizona surged from third to first in the final 25 yards to win the event.
Stanford got their first event win the 200 fly when David Mosko edged Cory Chitwood of Arizona by 14 hundredths of second. Mosko finished with a time of 1:47.36.
Also winning an event was Jason Duford who held on to win the 100 free in a very competitive race. His time of 44.12 bested two Arizona swimmers by less than a half of a second.
For the second consecutive day, John Criste swam a very strong 200 breast. The freshman won the event with a time of 2:00.04 to edge two Arizona swimmers by less than one tenth of a second.
The final event winner for Stanford was Nate Cass who took the 400 IM title. Cass recorded a season best time of 3:55.33 in the victory.
In addition to the pool record of 46.69 in the 100 fly, Subirats won the 100 back in a time of 47.48 and the 50 free in a time of 20.19 to lead the Wildcats to the meet win.
Stanford does not return to competition until Friday, February 8 when they travel south to take on Cal State Bakersfield. They will then continue to Los Angeles to face #20 USC on Saturday, February 9.
