Hein Leads No. 19 Women's Tennis Over No. 24 Texas

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 19 ASU Women's Tennis Team saw their freshmen step up huge Saturday afternoon as they were just able to top the No. 24 Texas Longhorns 4-3 in Tempe at Whiteman Tennis Center. Micaela Hein had wins in both singles and doubles, with her rally back in singles clinching the match for ASU as they now stand at 3-0 overall.
In doubles action, it came down to the wire as the Sun Devil freshman duo of Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein were able to defeat Stephanie Davison and Caoline Larsson 8-5, while Nadia and Laila Abdala fell to Vanja Corovic and Marija Milic in the number one spot to tie it. ASU's Jessica Leitch and Wendy Pilecka came out strong jumping ahead of the Longhorns, Courtney Zauft and Maggie Mello rallied back to tie and take the lead before the Sun Devils stepped up to take the point with a slim 9-7 win.
Singles proved to be just as exciting as Kelcy McKenna and Nadia Abdala made quick work of their opponents in the Number one and two spots, winning in straight sets. The Longhorns came storming back to win three successive after that though to tie the score 3-3 before Micaela Hein dug in on a tough three-set match where she took the first in a tough 7-5 win, before losing the second 5-7. The third set was a back and forth battle until Hein finally took the last one in a tiebreaker 7-6(2).
The Sun Devils are 3-0 going into a bye week before they host Florida International and Houston in Tempe February 8 and 10.
