Feb. 1, 2008
BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team (3-2) fell in a 4-2 loss to No. 6 USC (4-0) today at Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. With rain a strong possibility, the teams agreed to play singles matches first. Sophomore Kallim Stewart fought it out on court one with the ninth-ranked singles player in the country, Robert Farah, and came away with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. The win is Stewart's 10th singles victory of the year, fourth most for the Golden Bears.
With losses coming on court two and court six, senior Pierre Mouillon earned the only break of the second set against No. 43 Gary Sacks to get the 6-4, 7-5 win. Mouillon and Sacks went back and forth in the first set until Mouillon turned his 5-4 lead into a love-40 advantage in the set's final game. Forcing Sacks to hit wide, Mouillon sealed the first set with breathing room. In the second, the players held serve the entire way to a six games to five lead for Mouillon. Sacks double-faulted to set up match-point. Mouillon seized the opportunity to break serve, winning with a 7-5 second set score. The win put Cal and USC in a 2-2 tie.
After fighting it out for the first set on court five, freshman Bozhidar Katsarov fell 7-6 (2), 6-0 to Jason McNaughton, setting up court four as the deciding match for the dual. Facing Jaak Poldma, freshman Jonathan Dahan took the first set, 6-2 before giving up the second set to Poldma seven to six. Poldma gave up only two points in the tie-breaker. In the third and deciding set, the two broke serve once each, leaving Poldma with a 3-2 advantage. Dahan held in the seventh game to pull within one game but Poldma took the final two games to clinch the dual victory for the Trojans 4-2.
The Bears will host No. 9 UCLA tomorrow in a 1 p.m. match at Hellman. Please check CalBears.com for up-to-date information.
