Huskies Ground Pilots, 6-1

Feb. 1, 2008

SEATTLE - In the first of three weekend matches, the Husky women's tennis team breezed to a 6-1 victory over the Portland Pilots today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The 55th-ranked Huskies (4-1) need just one more win to match their entire 2007 win total.

Already owning a 1-0 lead thanks to doubles, the Huskies came out swinging in singles, winning all six first sets, none closer than 6-3. The first UW player to wrap up her match as freshman Venise Chan (Hong Kong, China), who trounced Megan Sporndli, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Chan is now 5-0 in dual play. Soon after, sophomore Joyce Ardies (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished off Christina Feyen at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

The clinching match came at No. 2 singles, where sophomore Aleksandra Malovic (Apeldoorn, Netherlands) defeated Portland's Anna Gullickson, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Allison Rainey (Mercer Island, Wash.) worked her way to a 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth singles over Stefanie Doolittle, and senior Tara Simpson (Vancouver, B.C.) improved to 5-0 in dual matches with a 6-2, 6-4 No. 3 singles victory, bumping UW's margin up to 6-0.

The Pilots scored their lone point when Husky freshman Vanja Radunovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) was forced to retire from her No. 5 singles match vs. Jenna Tanzer. Radunovic had cruised through the first set, 6-1, but Tanzer battled in the second set and took it to a tiebreaker. Early in the tiebreak, Radunovic lost her footing coming to net and fell. She played the remainder of the tiebreaker, losing 7-1, before deciding not to continue.

Washington pushed out to the early 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles point. The first win came at No. 3 doubles, where Malovic and Radunovic topped Gullickson and Audrey Jenks, 8-5. Ardies and Simpson clinched the point with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Griffin and Sporndli. Lastly, Chan and freshman Kelsey Anonsen finished off an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Up next, the Huskies face an important dual tomorrow afternoon against the 46th-ranked San Diego State Aztecs. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
