Stanford Defeated By Ninth-Ranked UCLA, 5-2

Feb. 1, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 42 Stanford Men's Tennis team dropped their spring home opener today to ninth-ranked UCLA, 5-2. Stanford falls to 0-3 on the season while UCLA improves to 2-0. The match was delayed nearly half an hour after the scheduled time of 1:30 due to the previous women's match against UNLV starting late.

In doubles action, Stanford took the early advantage with Richard Wire and Gregory Hirshman's 8-6 victory over Jeremy Drean and Michael Look. UCLA would quickly draw even when Mathieau Dehaine and Holden Seguso defeated Matt Bruch and Ted Kelly, 8-4. The doubles point ultimately came down to a neck-and-neck match between Stanford's Blake Muller and Alex Clayton and UCLA's Nick Meister and Harel Srugo. Muller and Clayton came from behind to tie the match at six games apiece, followed by the teams splitting the next four games and forcing the tiebreaker. UCLA, however, would go on to spoil the Cardinal's bid for the doubles point, capturing the tiebreaker 7-4.

In singles play, Muller would capture Stanford's first point in the No. 4 position with his straight-sets victory over Look, tying the overall match score at 1-1. Muller won his first set easily, 6-0, and despite falling behind 3-1 in the second set, bounced back to win the next five games and take the set and match, 6-3.

The next match would go to the Bruins as they regained the overall lead, 2-1, with Nick Meister's 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Greg Hirshman in the No. 6 singles position. No. 75 Richard Wire would put up a good fight in his challenge to upset UCLA's No. 32 Mathieau Dehaine, but Dehaine came out on top 7-6, 6-3, further putting Stanford in a hole. It would be UCLA's Drean that would seal the deal for the Bruins, though, as he defeated Kevin Kaiser 6-1, 7-6.

Second-ranked Clayton finished his match after UCLA had already claimed the victory. He would defeat Holden Seguso, 7-6, 6-3. Matt Bruch's match against Harel Srugo, meanwhile, was abandoned with Bruch up 7-6, 3-2.

Stanford will return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. as they will try to overcome the sixth-ranked USC Trojans, at the Taube Tennis Center in the final match of Cashin Company presents: The Stanford Challenge.
