No. 6 USC Tops Stanford 5-1
Feb. 2, 2008
PALO ALTO, CALIF. - The No. 6 USC men's tennis team pounded out a fifth straight win on Saturday, pushing out to a 5-1 win over host Stanford thanks to a strong singles outing by the Trojans. USC is now 5-0 on the season.
The teams opted to play out singles first due to the possibility of rain, and the Trojans made certain to get the match taken care of during the singles action. Abdullah Magdas lifted USC to a 1-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Phil Kao at the No. 6 position, and then the Cardinal evened the match when Alex Clayton topped USC's #9 Robert Farah 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. The Trojans wouldn't allow another point for the Cardinal, however, as the next four matches belonged to USC. Jaak Poldma started the run with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Ted Kelly, and Kaes Van't Hof made it 3-1 USC with his 7-6, 6-4 decision over Richard Wire at No. 2. Securing victory for the Trojans was #43 Gary Sacks, who toped Blake Muller 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 before Jason McNaughton rounded things out with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) decision over Kevin Kaiser at the No. 5 slot.
USC's next action comes with two out-of-state opponents visiting Troy. The Trojans first host Clemson in a 1:30 p.m. match on Friday (Feb. 8) and then play Boise State in a 1 p.m. match on Saturday (Feb. 9) at Marks Stadium.
