Huskies Take Bite Out of Bulldogs, 7-0

Feb. 3, 2008

SEATTLE - The Washington women's tennis team recorded its third sweep of the season and sixth win in a row this afternoon, defeating Gonzaga 7-0 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies (6-1) surpassed their 2007 win total in just their seventh match.

Senior Tara Simpson tied former Husky Cindy Olejar (1988-91) for 10th place on the UW's career singles wins list, winning her 65th career match today. Simpson drilled Gonzaga's Clare Dodge, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and is now 7-0 in dual play.

Sophomore Joyce Ardies posted a double bagel in her No. 4 singles match with Sydney Lederhouse, 6-0, 6-0, in the day's fastest match. Meanwhile, freshman Venise Chan ran her personal winning streak to 10 matches, frustrating Gonzaga's Emily Anderson at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

Melinda Wong saw her first singles action of the spring season this afternoon. The junior played at fifth singles and handled Kristen MacWilliam, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Aleksandra Krsljanin also got her first dual singles win, downing Erin Humphrey, 6-1, 6-1.

The last match on court involved sophomore Aleksandra Malovic and GU's Aglaya Kokurina at No. 2 singles. With UW owning a 6-0 lead, Kokurina became the first Bulldog to win a set, taking the second 6-4, after Malovic won the first by the same score. The two played a third-set super-tiebreak, and Kokurina held match point at 10-9, but Malovic saved it and took the next two points for the 12-10 win.

'Yesterday's win over San Diego State was the pivotal one for us, so it was good to see the team say tough and stay focused today,' said Head Coach Jill Hultquist. 'Gonzaga is a scrappy team, and we had to be careful not to let our guard down. We had some injuries and Melinda and Aleks K. stepped in and picked us up nicely.'

The Huskies have a week off before two more non-conference duals. UW hosts Purdue and Illinois February 16-17. While the matches are technically at home for Washington, the venue will be the Mercer Island Country Club, as that weekend coincides with the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships with the Washington men are hosting at the Nordstrom.
