Tara Simpson Named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON senior Tara Simpson has been named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Jan. 28-Feb. 3, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Simpson, a longtime stalwart for the Huskies (6-1), helped Washington to a 3-0 weekend which included an upset of 46th-ranked San Diego State. Simpson went a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles over the weekend, also posting her 65th career singles win which ties her for 10th all-time at Washington. Simpson is now 7-0 in dual play, mostly at No. 3 singles. She is 13-3 overall in singles, and 10-3 in doubles all with partner Joyce Ardies.

The Huskies have already won six matches early in 2008, more than the five wins they posted in all of 2007. Washington climbed to 49th in the latest ITA Rankings, up from its No. 70 preseason billing. Washington will next face Purdue on Sat., Feb. 16 and Illinois on Sun., Feb. 17. Both matches will be played at the Mercer Island Country Club.

This is the first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Simpson and the first all-time award for the Washington women's team. Weekly honors began during the 2006 season.
