UCLA's Dehaine, Washington's Simpson named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA senior Mathieu Dehaine and WASHINGTON senior Tara Simpson have been named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Jan. 28-Feb. 3, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Dehaine, playing out of the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, went 3-0 in singles play over the week, defeating two ranked opponents as UCLA improved to 3-0 on the season. The senior came back from a set down to defeat 13th-ranked Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, helping UCLA win its season opener 5-2. He defeated another ranked opponent in the Bruins' 5-2 victory over Stanford on Saturday, defeating No. 75 Richard Wire, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 3 position.
The Bruins are currently ranked No. 8 in the ITA collegiate rankings and host San Diego (1-1) on Wed., Feb. 6 at 1:30 p.m. and Boise State (5-1) on Fri., Feb. 8, also at 1:30 p.m.
Simpson, a long time stalwart for the 55th-ranked Huskies (6-1), helped Washington to a 3-0 weekend as well which included an upset of 46th-ranked San Diego State. Simpson went a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles over the weekend, also posting her 65th career singles win which ties her for 10th all-time at Washington.
The Huskies have already won six matches early in 2008, more than the five wins they posted in all of 2007. Washington will next face Purdue on Sat., Feb. 16 and Illinois on Sun., Feb. 17. Both matches will be played at the Mercer Island Country Club.
This is the first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for both Dehaine and Simpson. The award is the eighth for the UCLA men's team and the first all-time award for the Washington women's team.
