Cal's Sam Helvie and Samantha Young Named January Pac-10 Divers of the Month

WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. - University of California divers Sam Helvie and Samantha Young have been named Pac-10 Divers of the Month for January, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Wednesday.

Helvie, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., captured the one-meter title against both Arizona and Arizona State during the last weekend of January. Against the Wildcats, Helvie scored 346.65 on the one-meter and a 321.60 on the three-meter for second place. Against the Sun Devils, he improved on his one-meter score to record a season-best of 351.52 and placed third on the three-meter with a score of 324.37.

This is the third monthly honor for Helvie and Cal's third men's Diver of the Month all-time. Helvie is the Golden Bears' school record-holder in the one-meter (375.92), three-meter (381.15) and platform (279.90) competitions.

Young, a sophomore from Shoreline, Wash., placed in the Top-4 for every one of her dives in January. Her best one-meter score for the month was 255.37, which won her first place against the Sun Devils. Her best score for the three-meter was 271.00, which also helped her capture first place against the USC Trojans.

This is the first monthly honor for Young and California's first women's Diver of the Month all-time.
