Feb. 6, 2008
This Week: The WSU swim team will be competing at the University of Idaho at 11 a.m. Feb. 9...it is the third meeting between the two teams this season.
Cougar Catch-up: After Oregon State canceled its meeting with WSU in Pullman last week, Idaho came to Gibb Pool for the Cougars' senior night...WSU came away with the 113-53 victory...senior Bryn Mooney had two individual wins in the 200 butterfly (2:08.41) and the 200 IM (2:13.02)...freshman Sierra Burton also scored a double victory with wins in the 50 free (24.16) and the 100 free (51.93)...Burton anchored the 400 medley A relay to a victory (3:50.2) and Mooney kicked off the 400 medley B relay to a second-place finish (3:58.81)...other victories for the Cougars included sophomore Shawna Keller in the 500 free (5:07.53), junior Elyse Peterson in the 200 breast (2:20.52) and junior Afton Pickett in the 200 back (2:06.32).
Scouting the Vandals: Idaho stepped in last week to compete against the Cougars...the Vandals were led by Anna Humphrey and Alyson O'Brien led their squad...Humphrey placed second in the 500 free (25.05, third in the 200 IM (2:13.69) and was a member of the Vandals' third place 400 medley relay (4:00.09)...O'Brien placed took home two second places in the 100 free (53.82) and as the anchor for the 800 free relay (7:55.37)...O'Brien also anchored the 400 medley relay.
Head Coach Erica Quam Says: 'Unexpectedly, we got to swim Idaho last week. It was great to have a meet over the course of the weekend at Gibb Pool. The events we selected were mostly 200s of the strokes and some longer relays so this weekend, in anticipation that Oregon State might not reschedule, we came up with a lineup that has more of the 100s of the strokes and sprint events. It'll be a great situation for our swimmers to step up and focus on speed and working on some of the little details like starts, turns and finishes as we get closer to the Pacific-10 championships.'
Next Up for the Cougars: WSU will compete at cross-state rival Washington Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. in the Cougars final dual meet of the season.
