Eighth-Ranked UCLA Blanks No. 27 Boise State, 7-0

Feb. 8, 2008

LOS ANGELES - In a match much closer than the final score indicated, the eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team posted an impressive 7-0 victory over No. 27 Boise State on Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Friday's win means that the Bruins will take a perfect 5-0 record into next week's USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in Seattle, Wash.

After sweeping through the doubles with victories on all three courts, it looked as if the Bruins might have an equally easy time in singles play. Boise State (5-3), however, came out following the intermission to play some inspired tennis.

Bruin freshman Holden Seguso was the only player to enjoy a relatively easy victory, as he quickly downed 69th-ranked Brent Werbeck, 6-3, 6-2 at court No. 3 to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead.

UCLA did not post another point for nearly another hour, as all five remaining matches were extremely close. In fact, the Bruins had dropped the first set on all three back courts (Nos. 4-6).

Bruin senior Harel Srugo gave UCLA a 3-0 lead, fighting back from 5-3 down in the second set against 47th-ranked Luke Shields to eventually win 6-3, 7-5. That win set the stage for Michael Look at court No. 4, who pulled out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Steve Robertson.

With the match already decided, UCLA continued to pull out some impressive wins. Senior Mathieu Dehaine, ranked No. 32 nationally, managed to upset 19th-ranked Clancy Shields, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at court No. 2. After dropping the first set at court No. 6, freshman Nick Meister fought through a second set tiebreaker and eventually cruised to a 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 win over 65th-ranked Eric Roberson.

Senior Jeremy Drean capped off the Bruins' impressive afternoon, as he also battled back from a set down to take a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 decision over Piotr Dilaj at court No. 5.

UCLA, the eighth seed at the Indoors, will face ninth-seeded Notre Dame in the opening round on Thursday.
