Stanford Blanks BYU 7-0 For Second Straight Shutout

Feb. 8, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory and handed opponent No. 70 BYU their first loss of the season today on a sunny day at the Taube Family Tennis Center on the Stanford campus. The victory is Stanford's second shutout victory in a row. With this week's two wins, having previously beaten Hawai'i on Wednesday, the Cardinal improve to 2-4 overall.

Stanford established their domination early, capturing the doubles point first by winning all three matches.

The Cardinal then continued to put the victory out of BYU's sights as they quickly won the top three singles matches in straight sets. No. 75 sophomore Richard Wire easily handled BYU's Johnathan Sanchez, 6-1, 6-1 and second-ranked Alex Clayton didn't concede any games in the first set on his way to trouncing Thomas Shubert, 6-0, 6-3. No. 96 Matt Bruch only gave up three games to BYU's Evan Urbina, winning 6-2, 6-1.

No. 41 Ted Kelly, like Clayton, also managed to shutout his opponent in one set, defeating Tom Young 6-3, 6-0 and earning the point that would ensure Stanford's victory. Blake Muller struggled early, finding himself down 1-3 in the first set, but came back to win 6-3, and rolled to victory in his second set, 6-2. Kevin Kaiser, however, had to grind one out today, winning his first set 7-6, losing the second set 3-6, but eventually winning the tie breaker 10-3 to complete the shutout for Stanford.

'This was a very good win for us,' said head coach John Whitlinger. 'We avenged last years loss, but BYU is a very different team this year, with six freshman on their roster. I am pleased with the result and we will be looking forward to Wednesday against Baylor, a team we've never beat.'

The No. 4 Baylor Bears will be heading to The Farm for the second annual HP Cup on Wednesday, February 13 at 1:30 p.m. The contest marks the fifth home game in a row for the Cardinal.
