Palm Springs, CA - The California softball team could not overcome a 3-1 deficit to the New Mexico State Aggies and fell 3-2 in the second of the Cathedral City Classic hosted by Oregon State in Palm Springs on Saturday. Cal defeated Winthrop, 5-1 in its first game of the afternoon.

Cal (2-2) concludes tournament play tomorrow versus Mississippi State at 9:00 a.m.

Senior Erika Racklin had two of Cal's seven hits as well as a run scored. Sophomore Brittany LaRosa suffered the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in an inning of work.

The Bears jumped on the board early with a run scored in the top of the first. Freshman Valerie Arioto led off the inning with a single and quickly advanced to second base on an error by the NMSU pitcher. Arioto moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Gina Leomiti, before scoring on a wild pitch.

New Mexico State responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. A bases loaded walk issued by Marissa Drewrey knotted the score at 1-1, before a two out wild pitch allowed for the second run to score. NMSU would tack on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 3-1.

Cal trimmed the Aggie lead with a run in the fifth inning when Leomiti's RBI single up the middle of the infield plated Racklin.

The Bears almost rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but could not advance Arioto from second base.
