Howe Cracks Game-Winning Double To Seal Perfect Weekend For Cardinal
Feb. 10, 2008
San Diego, Calif. - Senior Erin Howe ripped a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning, helping the Stanford softball team to a 1-0 win over the Long Beach State 49ers today. The win was the fourth of the weekend for Stanford (4-0), and capped an undefeated opening weekend for the team at the University of San Diego Tournament.
Just 24 hours after the Cardinal won another 1-0 decision between the two teams, the squads were locked in another defensive battled. Missy Penna had a perfect game going into the sixth inning, struck out seven batters and allowed just three hits. Long Beach State pitcher Brooke Turner had six strikeouts and gave up just four hits.
Long Beach State threatened in the final two innings, putting runners in scoring position both times. Penna picked up her sixth strikeout to work her way out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, then recorded two straight outs to strand a 49er runner at third in the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Melisa Koutz started the Cardinal offense with a lead-off double down the left field line. Howe then stepped up and ripped her game-winning double to left center field to score pinch runner Michelle Schroeder and seal the Stanford win. The double was Howe's second in as many at bats, as the senior tagged two straight balls to the gap in left center field in the game.
The Cardinal will open the home season on Wednesday, taking on the Saint Mary's Gaels at 6 p.m. at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The team will stay home later in the week to host Pacific, Santa Clara and Wichita State in the first Stanford Invitational, Friday through Sunday.
