Feb. 10, 2008
BERKELEY - The California women's gymnastics team lost to No. 8 Oregon State, Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears (2-4, 0-4 Pac-10) finished with a final score of 191.325, while the Beavers (5-1, 4-0 Pac-10) secured a mark of 195.175. Although Oregon State won all four events, Cal put up some strong scores.
'We've worked on improving the small things and really focusing on what we had control over this past week,' said Cal head coach Cari DuBois. 'I couldn't be more proud of them. I'm seeing individuals step up and their confidence is growing. Considering all of our health issues, it's pretty exciting to see these ladies growing as individuals and getting stronger.'
The Bears nearly won floor, losing by the slight edge of 48.150-48.075. In that event, freshmen Avery Gee and Stefanie Cheng turned in good performances, with Cheng scoring a 9.775 and Gee tallying a 9.750. Senior Nicki Wells also notched a 9.650 to help Cal end the day strong.
'We came out on floor and did exactly what we had been doing in practice, and we were aggressive,' DuBois said. 'We focused on us and nothing else.'
On bars, sophomore Sophia Hocini tied her personal best with a 9.650. Glass had the highest score on that event with a 9.700.
Hocini was the only Bear to compete all-around. She finished third among all gymnasts with a score of 37.950.
The Bears host UCLA in their next meet Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
