Feb. 10, 2008

The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team travels to the 12th annual Northrop Grumann Regional Challenge, hosted by USC and Ohio State at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif.

The tournament runs from Feb. 11-13 and features 18 holes of stroke play per day. The course measures 5,912 yards with a par of 71.

The Bruins won two of four events in the Fall and placed third in their other two appearances. In 12 appearances at the Regional Challenge, UCLA has one victory in 2004 and five Top 5 finishes.

UCLA has not played since late October, but Coach Carrie Forsyth says the team is anxious to launch the next phase of the season.

'Our team is very excited to begin its Spring season at Palos Verdes,' she said. 'The course is always a tough test of golf. But our players are well-prepared for the challenge. They have worked very hard to get ready and we're looking forward to a strong showing.'

The 15-team field contains six teams that have won this tournament in the past. Eleven of those 15 teams were ranked in the Top 25 prior to Monday's start. Pepperdine is the defending champion.

The Bruins will feature a lineup of two juniors, a sophomore and a pair of freshmen. The players in this group have accounted for four victories in less than 12 months.

Junior All-American Tiffany Joh enters the tournament ranked 4th nationally after posting four Top 20 finishes in the Fall, including a shared victory at the Kent Youel Invitational. She boasts a scoring average of 71.5 in 12 rounds and is 12-under par collectively. Joh also is the defending Pac-10 champion.

Sophomore Sydnee Michaels enters the Regional Challenge ranked 21st. In the Fall, she recorded three Top 20 results and averaged 73.5 with one round under par. Michaels won the 2007 NCAA West Regional championship.

Freshman Maria Jose Uribe is the defending U.S. Women's Amateur champion and shared first place with Joh at the Kent Youel Invitational. Her scoring average is 72.2 and she has recorded four Top 20 results and four rounds under par.
