Feb. 12, 2008
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Freshman second baseman GiOnna DiSalvatore was named Pacific-10 Conference Softball Player of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday.
DiSalvatore posted an outstanding first weekend of her collegiate career, going 10-for-16 (.625) with nine runs batted in, five runs scored, four doubles, a home run and a 1.063 slugging percentage to help the Bruins to a 4-1 record.
In her first career at-bat, DiSalvatore singled in a pair of runs to stake the Bruins to a 2-0 lead against Nevada on Friday. Two at-bats later, DiSalvatore added another two RBI with a double to give her four runs batted in for the game. Later that day against #5 Oklahoma, the freshman posted another 2-for-3 effort with a run scored and a double.
Day two was even better for DiSalvatore, who began the afternoon with a 3-for-5 performance against Santa Clara, scoring three runs and driving in another on her third double in as many games.
In the second game of the day against UC Santa Barbara, DiSalvatore went 3-for-3 with four RBI, extended her consecutive hits streak to six and posted another double for her fourth of the weekend. Her biggest hit came in the seventh inning with two out and the Bruins down three. With two on, DiSalvatore crushed the first pitch over the right-field wall to tie the game, which UCLA went on to win in extra innings.
The Bruins, who moved up four spots to sixth in this week's national rankings, head to Las Vegas this weekend for the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. UCLA faces 22nd-ranked Missouri (9 a.m.) and South Carolina (11:15 a.m.) on Friday and Illinois (6 p.m.) and Portland State (8:15 p.m.) on Saturday at UNLV's Eller Media Stadium. On Sunday, the Bruins move to Henderson, where they face Wisconsin at 11:15 a.m. at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park. All games will feature Gametracker on UCLABruins.com.
