WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA freshman GiOnna DiSalvatore has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for Feb. 5-11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

DiSalvatore, a Palm Harbor, Fla. native, was the biggest force in a Bruin lineup that outscored their five opponents 50-15 in compiling a 4-1 record to open the season. The second baseman had multiple hits in all four of the wins and finished the weekend hitting .625 (10-for-16).

In her first collegiate at-bat, DiSalvatore singled home a pair of runs to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead over Nevada and would add two more RBI in her third at-bat of the game. Later that day, the freshman again posted a two-hit effort in the Bruin's 6-1 win over No. 5/5 Oklahoma.

The second day of her collegiate career may have been even better as she began the afternoon with a 3-for-5 performance in the Bruin's 27-1 victory over Santa Clara, scoring three runs and driving in another.

In the second game of the day, against UCSB, DiSalvatore blasted a game-tying three-run homerun in the seventh inning with two outs in a game the Bruins would go on to win, 7-5, in extra innings. She finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBI, extending her consecutive hits streak to six.

With the strong weekend, the Bruins moved up four spots in both polls, from 10th to sixth in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and from 14th to 10th in the USA Today/NFCA Poll. UCLA heads to the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic this week, where it will face a plethora of ranked teams in No. 22/RV Missouri, No. 23/21 Georgia, No. 10/7 Baylor, No. 15/16 Hawai'i, and No. 7/6 Northwestern.

This is the first career Player of the Week honor for DiSalvatore. It is the 99th all-time Player/Pitcher of the Week award for UCLA.

ALSO NOMINATED: Katie Crabb, ASU; Sari-Jane Jenkins, ORE; Cambria Miranda, OSU; Melisa Koutz, STAN; Lauren Greer, WASH.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD senior Missy Penna has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 5-11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Penna, a native of Miami, Fla., opened the season in tremendous fashion, throwing a no-hitter in her first appearance of the season against San Diego, tallying 14 strikeouts in the process. The no-hitter would have been a perfect game, save a Stanford throwing error in the sixth inning.

Penna's dominant start didn't stop there, however. She pitched two more complete games during the weekend and finished the opening stretch with three shutouts, not allowing a single run in 21 innings.

Penna also didn't walk a single batter in 21 innings and gave up just five hits to post a .076 opponent average and a 0.00 ERA. She finished the weekend with 27 strikeouts over the 21 innings pitched.

Penna is coming off of a 2007 season which saw her named to the All-Pac-10 Second Team as a sophomore after posting the third highest single-season strikeout (308) and win (25) total in Stanford history.

Stanford moves up six spots in the USA Today/NFCA Poll from 19th to 13th and three places in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll from 17th to 14th. The Cardinal are at home this weekend as they host St. Mary's on Wed., Feb. 13 before opening play in the Stanford Invitational over the weekend, which features Santa Clara, Wichita State, and Pacific.

This is Penna's second career Pitcher of the Week honor and Stanford's 33rd Player/Pitcher of the Week award all-time.

ALSO NOMINATED: Katie Burkhart, ASU; Marissa Drewrey, CAL; Alicia Cook, ORE; Donna Kerr, UCLA; Caitlin Noble, WASH.
