ASU Names Kevin Miniefield To Sun Devil Club Position
Feb. 13, 2008
Former Arizona State University cornerback Kevin Miniefield has been named Coordinator of Former Student-Athlete Development, Vice President for Athletics Lisa Love announced Wednesday.
Miniefield's purpose will be to facilitate relationships with all former Sun Devil student-athletes and eventually leading them to support athletics through the Sun Devil Club.
'We are excited to have a former Sun Devil back to help us in this new position,' Love said. 'We want to continue to bring our former student-athletes back into the fold, and its tremendous that we have one of them to lead this initiative.'
As part of this position, Miniefield will communicate with former student-athletes, forming ambassador programs for each sport by era and eventually getting them to join the Sun Devil Club. He will also communicate with head coaches about their program needs and overall support for the Sun Devil Club, and he will support both Sun Devil Club and sport-specific events.
'I'm excited about the position,' Miniefield said. 'I'm excited about having the opportunity to assist in building and continuing to build on our tradition.'
After graduating from Phoenix's Camelback High School, Miniefield attended ASU from 1988-1993 and earned a bachelor's degree in sociology. He played in 42 of the team's 44 games from 1989 to 1992, starting 34, and he finished his Sun Devil career with 146 tackles, five interceptions and 22 passes deflected.
In his final game at ASU, on Nov. 21, 1992, he was part of a defense that kept 16th-ranked Arizona out of the end zone as the Sun Devils defeated the Wildcats 7-6 in Tucson to help ASU finish the season with a winning record.
He earned first-team All-Pacific-10 Conference honors in 1992, and he played in the Blue-Gray Classic, an all-star bowl game, after his senior season.
Miniefield was drafted in the eighth round of the 1993 NFL Draft (201st pick overall) by the Detroit Lions. He went on to play five years in the NFL, four with the Chicago Bears and one with the Arizona Cardinals, before having to retire due to injury.
After his NFL career, Miniefield has worked in several different positions in the Phoenix area, including most recently as a mortgage consultant for Great Southwest Mortgage in Mesa.
